A veteran of Ford and Lincoln, David Woodhouse has been VP of design at Nissan Design America since 2019. Woodhouse joins Car Design News’ Laura Burstein to discuss working in California and offers insight into the workings of the studio

David Woodhouse VP of design at Nissan spoke with CDN’s Laura Burstein

”We are very lucky to be here in California – as we know a lot of trends start from the coasts in America and work their way to the heart of the country. So we are firmly embedded in observation, understanding lifestyle, the emergence of trends and bringing those into our work,” Woodhouse said.

”California is an amazing place for this because the diversity of landscape: from ocean and beaches to mountains, snow and desert. I think it is this combination of landscapes through the pursuit of recreation and sports and lifestyle that have created some amazing innovations in products and sports.

So I think one great example is our concept called Surf Out, presented as part of the Nissan ambition 2030, which is our future vision of BEV vehicles. I think the Surf Out is a great case study from the team here, but it actually was inspired both by surfing in California and Japan. It is a product that is more lifestyle than it is utility. So what do people need to do? Well, it’s a kind of a C-segment, which is all about efficiency and all of the additional utility and functions that a bare platform can provide.”
