Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Renault 5 Prototype win production car and concept car categories in Car Design Review 8 while Peter Horbury claims the lifetime achievement award
The Renault 5 Prototype and Hyundai Ioniq 5 were matched against a short list of cars launched between March 2020-2021 and voted for by designers from rival car makers. In the Concept Car category the Renault 5 Prototype saw off challenges from the Lexus LF-Z and Polestar Precept to claim the crown.
The judges commented that the “Renault 5 Concept shows a beautiful mix between retro design and the modern reincarnation of an iconic car of the past.”
Hyundai scooped the production car award with the retro-futurist Ioniq 5, another feather in the cap for SangYup Lee and his team in what has been a prolific and successful last 18 months.
The Lifetime Achievement award is awarded to true industry giants whose work has inspired and endured over the course of a career. And few would deny that Peter Horbury is a worthy winner.
In a career spanning almost 50 years, Horbury has worked his car design magic at Chrysler, Ford (twice), Volvo (three times), Geely Group and Lotus while also freelancing for Bentley, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, MG, Rolls-Royce, Triumph and more.
Horbury’s diverse portfolio covers cars, bikes, buses, vans and London taxis from the mid-70s until the present day and he has been employed across the world, from Coventry to Detroit and Shanghai to Gothenburg. He is current senior VP of design at Lotus.
